UMBRELLA ALLEY
Umbrella Alley is a vibrant public art installation located in downtown Louisville, Ohio, approximately 15 minutes northeast of Canton. The alley features nearly 200 colorful umbrellas suspended 20 feet above a 180-foot-long and 20-foot-wide space, creating a whimsical canopy that has become a popular spot for photos and community gatherings.
The idea originated with Rick and Raeann Guiley, whose goal was to take a forgotten alley in town and turn it into a destination of beauty that would brighten the downtown area and bring many visitors to our small town. It took many years of networking, planning and obtaining donations of money, materials and labor to bring this idea to life. There were many delays along the way but what better time to unveil it than May 2020 when the world was looking for fun, outdoor activities after a few months of isolation due to COVID!
In addition to the canopy of floating umbrellas, the alley boasts an 8’ x 44’ mural that is now changing twice a year, a beautiful and fun flower mural and painted play area for the children, as well as an artsy piano available each summer for visitors to play and fill the alley with music. The alley also contains several bright-colored tables and chairs, providing visitors with a lively and immersive experience. The installation was created through a partnership involving local citizens, businesses, the City of Louisville, and ArtsinStark, aiming to rejuvenate the downtown area and highlight the city’s art scene.
The Umbrella Alley committee is always brainstorming and coming up with fresh and interesting art for the alley so it can be new and exciting each time for repeat visitors. And even if nothing has changed since your last visit, the experience is always unique based on the weather. The umbrellas are absolutely stunning on a clear and sunny day, but also are mesmerizing to watch as they dance in the wind during a windy day.
Umbrella Alley is open to the public 24/7 and free to enjoy. Visitors can stroll under the colorful canopy, enjoy lunch on public benches, or explore nearby locally-owned restaurants and boutiques.
