Important Electric Aggregation Update
Attention Louisville Electric Aggregation Program Participants
The City of Louisville’s Electric Aggregation program will be increasing from its current rate of $.0657/kWh to $.0952/kWh at the end of the current agreement this June. This new agreement is for one year and remains with Dynegy Energy Services.
Increases in electricity costs will be felt across the state primarily due to rising generation supply costs which recently saw capacity charges surge by 800%. Factors contributing to the increased capacity cost include population growth, increased data center power usage, and extreme weather patterns, combined with the retirement of older power plants and delays in building new ones. This will affect both residential and business consumers.
How to Prepare for Higher Electricity Costs?
Here are three tips to prepare for higher electricity costs and potentially lower your bill:
- Shop for an electricity plan from another supplier. Compare alternatives to the city’s rate by going to Energy Choice Ohio--https://www.energychoice.ohio.gov/ApplestoApples.aspx and look for alternative rates and plans. Remember, there is no charge to move from the city’s aggregation program to another program if you desire.
- Reduce your electricity usage by focusing on home improvements like a programmable thermostat, weatherize your home, or simply change your furnace/central air filter more often. Use an Internet search to learn more ways to save and reduce your energy usage.
- Lower your usage on the hottest days this summer, and your capacity charges will be lower for 2026-27. Utilities publish a “price to compare” for residential and business customers. The AEP Ohio Residential Price to Compare is estimated to be over $.10/kWh starting in June 2025. However, commercial customers price to compare varies because of your capacity tag assignment. Think of a capacity tag as how much your meter contributes to the overall peak demand on the grid. Your tag is reset each year based on the 5 highest system usage days each summer. In 2024, the 5 highest system usage times were all between 5-7pm. Cut your usage on hot days during this time!
Please know that the city is working hard to get residents the best price possible with our aggregation program. Unfortunately, much of what goes on in the utility world is out of our control. Therefore, if you haven’t already done so, we strongly urge you to become informed and take control of your energy options to help offset this pending increase.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at (330) 875-2266 Ext 310.
